“Don’t Assume, it Makes an Ass Out of U and ME”

If you think that none of this is relevant to you because you’re raising your child in the suburbs  far from any bad influence, then I would have to strongly disagree with your views. I attended Catholic school, Church on Sunday, honour roll student, band practice throughout the week, after school sports. Doesn’t sound like your typical troubled teen now does it?

I didn’t grow up in a very rich area, but it wasn’t a low income area either. I grew up in a working middle class family, and attended the newest and most up to date Catholic Jr. High School in the area. They spent lots of money adding in new areas to the school, making sure we had the latest computers and our library was up to date.  Even growing up in these conditions, I wasn’t out of reach from the vices of growing up.

Now don’t make the same mistake my mother did, she assumed. Since I had a good home life, had extracurricular activities, she knew my friends, got good grades, she assumed that I was perfectly normal. See as a teen I was good at hiding the bad things I did, especially to my family, because I didn’t want to get in trouble. So don’t assume your teenage child is telling you everything. DON’T not trust them either though or you’ll drive them away, there’s a fine balance you need to find with your own child.

Be sure not to miss the next section where I’ll explain why peer pressure isn’t always what drives teenagers to try drugs and other vices. I’ve titled it, “Peer Pressure’s Not The Only Bitch.”
